What to Avoid During Fertility Stimulation Injections: A Guide for Patients

Starting fertility treatment with stimulation injections is an exciting yet sometimes overwhelming process. As a nurse, I want to help you navigate this part of your journey with clear, easy-to-follow advice that comes from some of our most commonly asked questions in this field. Here are key things to avoid to ensure the best possible outcome during your stimulation cycle:
1. Avoid Intercourse
During your stimulation injections, it's generally advised to avoid intercourse. This is because your ovaries are stimulated to produce multiple eggs, and having intercourse could increase the risk of ovarian torsion (twisting) or infection. Always follow your doctor’s advice regarding when it's safe to resume sexual activity. We generally recommend waiting until 2 weeks after stim has completed before resuming intercourse. A key point to also remember is that if you held your oral birth control during stimulation, it can take a full cycle for it to be effective again so backup contraception should be utilized.
2. Steer Clear of Intense Exercise
While light activity like walking or gentle stretching is usually fine, high-intensity exercise should be avoided. This includes running, weightlifting, and activities that put a lot of strain on your body. Intense exercise can increase your risk of OHSS or ovarian torsion.

3. Massage and Physical Therapy (PT)
Gentle massage or therapy is usually okay, but deep tissue massages should be avoided. Avoid vigorous or invasive physical therapy treatments that might put pressure on your abdomen. Always check with your fertility clinic about any specific types of bodywork to ensure they won’t interfere with your treatment.
4. Make Smart Diet Choices
Towards the end of your stimulation cycle, managing your diet can help reduce bloating, discomfort, and other symptoms. Focus on eating:
- High-protein foods (lean meats, beans, eggs) to support your body's needs.
- Foods high in antioxidants (fruits, vegetables) to help reduce inflammation.
- A balance of healthy fats (avocados, olive oil) to manage hormone levels.
Also, stay hydrated—water helps keep your body functioning optimally and may reduce bloating.

5. Get Plenty of Rest
During this time, your body is working hard. Make sure to get enough sleep and rest. Avoid overworking yourself, and listen to your body. If you’re feeling tired, take a break. Resting can support your body’s ability to handle hormonal changes.
6. Work When You Feel Up to It
Everyone responds differently to the injections. Some days, you may feel energized and ready to work, while other days you may need more rest. You can continue working, but be mindful of your energy levels. If you're feeling too drained or uncomfortable, don't hesitate to take a sick day and give yourself a break.
7. Be Careful with Supplements and CBD
Certain supplements and CBD products can interfere with fertility treatments. While some vitamins, like folic acid, are commonly recommended during fertility treatment, others—such as high doses of vitamin E, fish oil, or herbal supplements—should be avoided unless approved by your doctor.
CBD, while popular for relaxation and pain relief, can also have an impact on hormones and the effectiveness of your fertility treatment. It’s important to discuss any use of CBD or other supplements with your fertility specialist, as they may interfere with the medications or your body’s response to them.
In Summary:
- Avoid intercourse and intense exercise.
- Be cautious with massage and PT.
- Focus on a balanced diet and stay hydrated.
- Rest when needed, and work at your own pace.
- Consult with your doctor about supplements and CBD use.
The stimulation phase can be challenging, but by following these guidelines, you’ll help your body respond well to the treatment and stay as comfortable as possible. Always consult with your doctor for any specific concerns.
Take care of yourself, and remember—you’re not alone in this journey.
